SHORT CURRICULUM


Alfio Sgalambro is a clarinettist and composer. He has a considerable number of publications regarding musical theory and pratice to his credit:

He has to his credit numerous transcriptions, arrangements and compositions for various formations, from duet to orchestra, some of which have been winners in competitions. 

He has also written several papers on musical analysis, melodic dictations for theory and solfeggio exams and a treatise on irregular groups.

He has participated in two recordings for record labels Splasc (h) Records (Book Of Yesterday, Stefano Maltese) and M.A.P., (Verso Oriente, Michele Conti).

He has recorded three CDs of his own compositions, “In Your Mind” (2011 Labirinti Sonori), “Cahier de Voyages” (2015 Heart Music Project), “The Inner Worlds” (2021 Heart Music Project). One of his compositions has been included in the recording project New Music Demo 2015 (Archives of the XXI Century in Milan Contemporary Music Center); the CD was presented, in November 2015, at the Museo del Novecento in Milan.

As a composer he is interested in various genres of music, from classical music to jazz to world music, seeking to develop and deepen the creative aspects of improvisation and musical language.

He is included:

in the B.D.C.I. (Data Bank of Italian Composers) and in the B.D.M.I. (Italian Musical Data Bank) of CIDIM;

He has been a SIAE  associate holding the title of composer since 1998, of the GATM (Gruppo di Analisi e Teoria Musicale) since 2017 and a member of Nuovo Imaie since 2021.

He has written music since 2000 in magazines and online.

He is author of a call for paper (special issue) entitled: The Methodologies of Teaching Music to Middle School Students (in American Journal of Art and Design).

He currently teaches clarinet and chamber music at the I.C. “Salvo Basso” in Scordia (CT) Sicily and in 2016-2017 he worked at the Musical Lyceum “Turrisi-Colonna” of Catania, as Theory, Analysis and Composition teacher.

 

FULL CURRICULUM

Alfio Sgalambro has studied Clarinet, Piano, Music Analysis, Composition, Choral Conducting and attended courses in gregorian chant, music theory, choral singing, musical practice, history of music, music analysis, choral and orchestra conducting in the educational setting. He has done academic exams at the conservatories of Trapani, Palermo, Catania and Bologna and is qualified to teach in both middle and secondary schools.

He served as president of the “N. Paganini ” music school in Lentini, Sicily where he also worked as artistic director, teaching of theory and music theory, harmony, music analysis, clarinet,  dealing Chamber music.

He currently teaches clarinet and chamber music at the Scuola Media “Salvo Basso” of Scordia where he is also co-director of the institute orchestra and arranger of orchestral pieces and ensemble. In 2016-2017 he worked at the “Turrisi-Colonna” Musical Lyceum in Catania, as teacher of Theory, Analysis and Composition.

He has participated as a jury member for several music competitions and has held Music Analysis seminars.

He was one of the organizers of the 1st National Music Competition, held in Lentini (SR) at the Odeon cinema and theatre and the various “Indirizzo Musicale Orchestra” Exhibitions held in Scordia (CT) in the months of June 2012 and 2015 at the Metropol cinema and in 2016, at the auditorium of the “E. Majorana ” High School.

He has to his credit numerous transcriptions, arrangements and compositions for various formations, from duet to orchestra, some of which have been winners in competitions. He has published the following volumes:

He has collaborated on two recordings for the labels Splasc (h) Records (BOOK OF YESTERDAY, Stefano Maltese) and M.A.P., (VERSO ORIENTE, Michele Conti).

He has played with a number of jazz bands and cultured classical music groups such as the “Maltese Orchestra”, with which he was in the Jazz Festival “Mediterranean Sounds” by Roccella Jonica (broadcast on Rai Stereo 3); The Music Workshop “Piazza Scienze e Lavoro” by Antonio Moncada; ” Baroque Ensemble “; Ensemble “Ludus Tonalis”; the “A. Vivaldi ” Orchestra, with which he performed Psalm IV” Cum invocarem “Nicola Piccinni for Soprano (C. Fusco), Choir and Orchestra (third performance of the twentieth century, under the direction of G. Ferrauto).
With the pianist M. Inserra Alfio coordinates the Marcal Project, a vocal-instrumental formation that welcomes various musical languages, from classical to jazz and ethnic music and aims to develop and deepen the creative aspect and improvisational sound of the language. He has also played in Duo, with Flute, Percussion, Piano, Guitar.


In the month of November 2011 he released his first CD “IN YOUR MIND”, for the label “Labyrinths Sound Records” of Syracuse (International Record Distribuition), in which he was a performer, composer and conductor.
In June 2015 he released his new album, “CAHIER DE VOYAGES” (Heart Music Project, with the sponsorship of Radio Abracadabra, Cemat Federation, Association CIMA, Distances -Community Festival of Sound Arts- and LAB PSL -Laboratory Music Piazza Scienze e Lavoro), which has collected his compositions written over a quarter-century.
The two albums were presented live on RADIO ABRACADABRA, in November 2014 the first, and in August 2015 the second. In September 2015 it was the FED CEMAT that presented the so-called “CAHIER DE VOYAGES”, transmitting several different tracks on RADIO CEMAT.
Some passages of the two CDs “In Your Mind” and “Cahier de Voyages”, have been broadcast by RAI Radio 3 (on the occasion of the program “BATTITI”), SWITZERLAND ITALIAN RADIO (Network Two), RADIO ABRACADABRA.IT (during the programs “NIGHT OF NOTES”, The Theatre of the Mind and “NIGHT NOTES”), Radio CEMAT (which are sometimes included in its schedule under the heading CONTEMPORARY CHAMBER MUSIC, MUSIC OF THE 2000s and ITALIAN COMPOSITIONS) and by Chigiana Radio Arte (in the projects CHIGIANA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL and BEYOND THE SILENCE).
The albums were also reviewed in the newspaper “LA SICILIA” (Sgalambro’s clarinet reflections by A. Sgroi), on “MUSICA JAZZ” and ALLABOUTJAZZ.COM (A. Bazzurro), “IL GIORNALE DELLA MUSICA” (L . Canini), JAZZITALIA.NET and JAZZCONVENTION.NET (G. Montano), “IL BLOG DELLA MUSICA” (Silvia Spadon). In September 2021 he released his third CD, “THE INNER WORLDS” (Heart Music Project), reviewed by G. Montano (jazzconvention.net) and A. Bazzurro (L’Isola della Musica Italiana). Marco Pollice interviewed Sgalambro on Blog della Musica (Alfio Sgalambro: nella sua musica ricerca, sperimentazione e tradizione). Chigiana Radio Arte has included the CD in the Chigiana International Festival 2021 project and Radio Cemat presented it in one of its columns, also including it in the Italian Musicians for Ukraine project. The Inner Worlds is featured in an episode of Battiti, on Rai Radio 3 (Musica per immagini). 

One of his compositions (“Shadows”), for solo piano, was selected by the Milan Contemporary Music Centre and included in the project “NEW MUSIC DEMO 2015″, recording series ARCHIVES OF THE XXI CENTURY. The CD, which includes the songs of the twelve selected composers, was presented in November 2015 to the MUSEUM OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY in Milan.
